Solutions for moisture and indoor air problems

Vahanen offers expert services in building physics for solving moisture damage and indoor air problems, renovation planning for damaged areas and on-site supervision. In addition to surveys and planning, we conduct risk assessments for plans, demanding computational moisture, heat and flow performance analyses, as well as moisture control plans during the projects. Due to continuous research and development, we can take advantage of long-term experiential knowledge in our services. This allows us to provide optimal solutions for the prevention of moisture and indoor air problems.

Indoor air problems can be controlled through building physics

An indoor air and moisture performance condition survey should be conducted when:

  • the users of the property begin to show symptoms that may indicate structural moisture damage or improper ventilation
  • the quality of indoor air is deemed poor based on a sensory assessment
  • the renovation method and scope is specified when planning the execution of a structural renovation

A comprehensive indoor air and moisture performance condition survey provides a detailed picture of the indoor air quality of the entire building as well as factors contributing to poor air quality. Built environments contain microbes, particulate and gaseous impurities but removing them is not always necessary. In many cases, controlling pressure ratios and enhancing the airtightness of structures is sufficient. Using the renovation procedures presented in the survey report, it is possible to draft a renovation plan for achieving high indoor air quality.

Indoor air quality is also affected by structural toxins which may be found in the construction materials of older buildings. Materials hazardous to health can be identified using a toxin survey, for which Vahanen uses its wide ranging expertise and experience in various scientific fields (building material technologies, chemistry, geology and mineralogy). We also have our own building material laboratory at our disposal for the analysis of samples.
